Homework Policy


The purpose of homework, like schoolwork, is learning. Homework is important for students of all ages, as it helps them build on what they have already learnt in the classroom by reinforcing and consolidating this knowledge. It also prepares them for the next stage in their learning. Homework should be something the child can achieve successfully. 

Homework is also an important tool of communication between school and home. It helps to bridge the gap between home and school and should be seen by teachers, parents/guardians and students as a vital part of the home-school partnership, which supports students while they learn. This policy has been formulated using the guidelines recommended by the Department of Education and Training.

RESPONSIILITIES

The role of the teacher is to:

ensure homework is related to the work being done at school and does not contain any work not previously covered in class.
set homework which allows students to demonstrate what they are capable of, and which challenges them to progress.
give students sufficient time for the completion of tasks.
ensure students are aware of what is expected of them, when homework is due and how their work will be assessed.
ensure parents understand what homework is required, and when it is due.
review homework to determine achievement by students.
maintain student homework records.

The task of the student is to:

complete homework within the given time frame.
show their homework to their parents or guardians.
return completed homework to school.

Parents and Caregivers can help by:

supporting students in completing homework.
providing, if possible, a place for homework and study.
communicating with teachers about any concerns with homework or their child’s approach to homework.
